About Us



Marven Payne (known to his closest friends and family as simply M.), is a creative artist, professional photographer, entrepreneur, humanitarian, rebel, U.S. Navy veteran, father, fashion connoisseur, former dancer/choreographer, director, animal lover, conservationist, global citizen, martial artist, human rights activist, student of life and all around renaissance man.



SPTMBR. was conceptualized by photographer em.fotografik after he became frustrated by the senseless and inhumane torture and killing of black people in his native home the United States. Determined to do something positive to uplift the spirit of his people, M. went back to the time of when he once used his love of dance as his way of expressing himself to the world and promoting positivity.  

Now in his mid 50s and having long since retired from dance, M. thought about what could be a new conduit for promoting positivity. Since an early age, the two things M. has ALWAYS loved most have been dance and fashion, and since dance was no longer a viable option, fashion was the obvious choice.

With this in mind he needed a name for his new brand. M.'s favorite number has always been the number 9, and although he never told her about it, the number 9 was ironically also the favorite number of his daughter, world champion frisbee player Octavia Payne. The number 9 in numerology is associated with many positive qualities such as spiritual awakening, humanitarianism, philanthropy, universal love, charity, self-sacrifice, generosity, inner-strength, strength of character, creative abilities, sensitivity, loyalty, discretion, brilliance, problem-solving, self-love, freedom, tolerance, humility, altruism and benevolence, empathy, non-conformity, artistic genius, communication, influence, perfection, magnetism, understanding, forgiveness, compassion, sympathy, mysticism, optimism and divine wisdom. It was with all this in mind, that M. knew his brand would somehow have to be associated with his favorite number 9.

Then it hit him! September is the 9th month of the year, it also has 9 letters in it's spelling. It also happens to be the month M. was born. But he couldn't just write out the word September as it would make for a pretty long and boring logo. Always the creative, he began thinking of ways he could write out September and make it look cool and thus SPTMBR. was born. When he showed the logo to his son Jordan (who is normally very cool and pragmatic), and saw the excitement in his eyes, M. knew he had found the perfect name for his new venture. His son Jordan soon joined him as SPTMBR.'s first investor and the brand was born.



One quote that M. has always tried to live by is one of Leonardo da Vinci - "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication". Simplicity in our message, which is  to spread love and positivity through fashion. Simplicity in the clothes and accessories we design. We truly believe simplicity is everything. Therefore, our mission is simply to create minimalistic, functional, high-quality clothing with positive messaging that our customers feel proud to wear as much as the clothing looks and feels good on their bodies.
